SCCs are school-level advisory bodies that are required in every school. The Education Act, 1995 and The Education Regulations, 1986 provide a common, yet flexible, framework for all SCCs. Under the authority of boards of education, SCCs have specific powers and duties. SCCs consist of elected members and appointed members. SCCs work with parents and community to develop shared responsibility for the learning success and well-being of all children and youth . They encourage and facilitate the involvement of youth, parents and the community in school planning and improvement processes.
PARENTS AS PARTNERS!
Would you like to keep up with what is going on at ES Laird? Are you looking for a way to get involved in the activities of our school? Would you like to meet others in our school community?
When one thinks of School Community Councils, most people would generally think volunteering or fundraising. That’s not necessarily the case. By attending meetings you will find out what is going on at school and you will learn the information your child somehow forgot to share. Attending meetings is your way of staying informed and showing interest in your child’s education. We invite all interested parents to attend meetings and share their ideas about what would improve our school. If there are any activities you would like to volunteer to help, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
The ES Laird SCC has meetings once every month. Elections will be held annually in the spring. Meeting dates will be advertised on the calendar.
Parent involvement matters! Students are more likely to be motivated, to earn higher grades, to have better behaviour and social skills, and to continue their education to a higher level when their parents are actively supporting their success at school.
Parent involvement can take many forms:
- helping with School Community Council activities
- volunteering for field trips and school activities
- making sure there is a quiet place set aside to do homework,
- helping with homework
- meeting with teachers
- talking to your child about their day at school.
