A Call for Volunteers
Hi Folks,
Here are a few upcoming events for the school that I need your help with:
- baking and parent volunteers for E.S. Laird track meet concession on Thursday, May 13th from 9:00a.m. until 3:00p.m. If you can help all day, or for just a few hours I will take any help I can get and make it work into the schedule. The concession will be set up out of the storage shed just through the gates at the track at LCHS.
- our School Community Council AGM which will be held on Wednesday, May
19th at 7:00p.m. in the Library. Elections will be held for the new council and I
highly encourage parents to get nomination forms from the school and put their
names forward. Being involved through the SCC is a great way to have input into
helping the school make decisions around the Learning Improvement Plan for the
school and providing feedback on what works best to assist our children in their
learning. Parents need to get more involved in their children’s education if we
want them to be successful. This is your opportunity!
- baking and parent volunteers for a concession at the E.S. Laird/Bishop Lloyd District Track meet on Tuesday, May 25th from 9:00a.m. until 4:00p.m. We share this work with the parents of Bishop Lloyd, as well as the proceeds which go back into programs for our kids at the school.
- Tuesday, June 1st, the school division, through organization by staff from LCHS,
is hosting a fun day in the gym at LCHS from 1:00p.m. until 3:00p.m. for Aboriginal students from E.S. Laird, Bishop Lloyd, and LCHS. They have asked for parent volunteers from each of the schools to come and serve a hotdog and drink treat to the students during this time.
- E.S. Laird’s year end activity – Fun Day at Bud Miller Park! I need parents to
come out and help BBQ and serve hamburgers, drinks and ice cream treats for our kids. We usually start cooking around 10:00a.m., are cleaned up and out-of-there by 12:30p.m.or so.
- if you are a grade 9 parent and haven’t had the opportunity to experience the great
time and discussions in an SCC then please come join us at our LCHS SCC meetings over lunch. We provide lunch and the meetings are only an hour long.
Our next meeting will be at noon in the Video Conferencing room at LCHS on Thursday, June 10th.
If you can help with any of the above events or need more info, please give me a call at home(306)825-5562 or on my cell(306)821-2235 as soon as you can.
Colleen Young, SCC Chair

- Cyberbullying Video/Discussion – Since our presentation here in November, Colleen Young has given this presentation at LCHS and Rendell Park School SCC meetings. She will be presenting a student-oriented version to the Rendell Park grades five and six classes.
New Business:
a) Parent Voice – Arron Kohlman: The school board has identified communication as a priority. There will be a 1-2 page spread in the local newspaper in early April, mid-May, and the end of June. The board wishes to highlight and celebrate what our parents are doing, new curriculum, innovation in education, what’s happening at Avery School and LPSD alumni. Threee feature themes will be 1) Role of Parents and SCC with quotes from parents and pictures showing parental involvemnt, 2) New Curricula and 3) Avery School. Arron is visiting as many SCC’s as possible and presenting a framework “Celebrating Parent Engagement”, giving space for parents to make their comments. This sheet can be completed and dropped off with school administration, at the central office
or comments can be emailed directly to Arron Kohlman. We need to celebrate the learning in our school division.. Your suggestions for items to be included in the newspaper insert are welcome. Colleen would like to see a note of encouragements to get parents involved in SCC, attending a t least a couple of meetings a year. Lorelee suggested highlighting what a benefit it is to both student and parent when the parent is involved with and informed about school activities and events. Comments and quotes to Arron Kohlman by Mar. 26.
- Upcoming Events presented by Colleen Young:
- Apr. 2 – 9: Easter holidays
- Apr. 19 – E.S. Lairs SCC 7:00 PM
- Apr. 21 – Just Jazz at Bishop Lloyd 7:00 PM. All LPSD Jazz bands perform.

- Apr. 27-28 – Parent –Teacher conferences
- May 6 – Exploratory & School Dance, school welcomes ideas for exploratory experiences for our students
- May 25-28 – Sabers Shine (Gala Evening May 26)
- June 2 – E.S. Laird Achievement Night
c) Reflections on the year … Future Directions: any ideas for next year’s SCC priorities and to engage parents in SCC? Is time of day a probles? How about lunch hour? A question about meeting time could be addes to a survey regarding how parents are receiving school related information and which is preferable, i.e. newsletter, website, email? A possible information topic for a SCC meeting may be our school discipline policies and how they work.
d) On The Move workshop: was held Mar. 16, 2010. This was sponsored by the Lloydminster In Motion Committee and hosted here at E.S. Laird. The main target audience is inactive young girls. The workshop was funded by the Canadian Assoc. for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity. Attendance of 21 participants included people from our community, Prairie North Health Region, coaches and teaching staff.
Other Items:
- Lorelee Marin mentioned the successful classroom presentations she has given here at E.S. Laird to the grade seven students. She pointed out how many of how students have very little support to make positive choices and how much they need our school community to support them. Thank you Lorelee for sharing your knowledge with our students.
- Colleen will speak to Mr. McLennan to confirm April and May meeting dates and times. She informed this meeting that the new school announcement in the local news pertains to a new French Immersion school in the Lloydminster Catholic School Division.
Closure and Adjournment:

- Cyber Bullying Power Point presentation – produced by Government of Alberta
Mrs. Young introduced this presentation to the group. As background she indicated that the first Internet services were actually created in 1960. At the time it was never actually intended for personal use but for scientific research.
We have discussed some of the issues of communication technology that can have a negative impact on our young people and we’d like a better understanding of what we need to know and do as parents. Cyber bullying may be “hidden” but it is still very hurtful an affects what is going on in our schools.
Mr. McLennan facilitated the power point presentation and group discussion. He cautioned us to recognize that the presentation is not “all kids, all the time” and the use of this technology is not always negative. There are really positive results with technology. We still need to be aware of the risks, educate our selves, and our children.
“Points” from the power point
- Less than 1/3 of parents are using filtering or blocking software
- In North America approx. 24 million children are online. Including teens, that number increases to 45 million.
- One out of five has been solicited for sex in the last year.
- One of four children was sent sexually explicit pictures in the last year.
- Some chat rooms are run by pedophiles and predators
- 75% of children willingly provide personal information about themselves on the Internet.
- Online predators contact 77% of youth by the age of 14 and 22% of children ages 10 –13 will be approached.
- Educate yourself about Internet Safety and protect yourself.
- Cyber Bullying uses information and communication technology to support deliberate, repeated, hostile behavior by an individual or group that is intended to harm others. (Bell Belsey, www.cyberbullying.ca)
Who bullies whom? It seems everybody bullies anybody; student to student, student to teachers/administrators, employee to employee.
Cyber Bullying threatens, harasses, embarrasses, socially excludes, and damages relationships and friendships. This can be continuous and escalating.
THINK BEFORE YOU POST – that information can go anywhere and will not disappear.
Why do cyber bullying?
- Anger, revenge, entertainment
- Boredom, too many tech toys
- To get a reaction, or reacted impulsively
- Power-hungry
- Some think they are righting wrongs or defending others.
How easy is it to get information about you? Very easy, by sharing personal pictures and videos, a personal web cam, cyber bullying.
Helpful hints:
- Do not share passwords or login info except with teacher, parent.
- If harassed, tell a trusted adult.
- Leave the harassment location
- Never respond to harassing messages.
- Save harassing messages for the ISP (identification of the computer) or school.
- Report to the police if necessary (threats, hate messages, personal danger)
- Take a stand against bullying of all kinds (Stop, leave my friend alone, get an adult).

Part of tonight’s message is that we, as parents, need to be educated on this because our kids are online. We need to have conversations with our kids about all the cyber topics. This evening was excellent learning opportunity and we really appreciate Mrs. Young’s and Mr. McLennan’s presentation and knowledge.
Meeting Schedule: SCC meetings will be held the third Wednesday of the month: Nov. 18, no Dec. meeting, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, Mar. 17, Apr. 21, May 19 AGM and Elections.
